Spotlight on Biotechnology Division Ching Hou Biotechnology Award Winner: Suk Hoo Yoon

Congratulations to Suk Hoo Yoon for winning the Biotechnology Division Ching Hou Biotechnology Award.

Biotechnology Division Ching Hou Biotechnology Award recognizes a scientist, technologist or leader who has made significant contributions to the advancement of the Division’s area of interest.

This spotlight will help you get to know Dr. Suk Hoo Yoon, including an overview of current research and how AOCS has helped develop his career.


A brief biography:  Suk Hoo Yoon is a director of Samyang Cooperation, Seoul, Korea. He has been working on lipid biotechnology, chemistry, and processing for 40 years. During his career he has also been president of the Korea Food Research Institute and a professor in the department of food science and biotechnology at Woosuk University.  He has published numerous papers and his work has been recognized by awards including the Order of Science and Technology Merit from the President of Korea in 2012, the AOCS Fellow Award in 2015 and the Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award from the Korean Society of Food Science and Technology in 2016. Dr. Yoon has served on the editorial committee of Journal of Food Science and is currently an editor-in-chief of Food Science and Industry. He joined the AOCS community 1979 in and was a leader in the Asian Section for many years. His has also served on the Biotechnology Division Executive Steering Committee. 


Can you tell us about current research?

My research interests include single cell oil, lipase and phospholipase reactions, the chemistry of lipid oxidation, fats and oils processing


What was your reaction when you learned you had won the award?

I was so honored to be selected and appreciated it. It means a lot to have the support from my colleagues, and family.


How has AOCS helped develop your career?

AOCS broadened my networking between experts in the fats and oils field, strengthened my professional knowledge, and has kept me up to date on the latest information in the field.



Dr. Yoon a former player, was an American-football commentator on a nationwide television network in Korea (1987-2011).
