New Nutrition Standards for All Foods Sold in U.S. Schools-USDA FNS Seeking Comments

USDA today announced the public comment period has opened on proposed new standards to ensure that children have access to healthy food options in school. The Proposed Rule has been published in the February 8, 2013 Federal Register with comments due by April 9, 2013.

Of particular interest to the AOCS audience:
Foods sold must meet a range of calorie and nutrient requirements:  
Total fat must be < 35% of calories; saturated fat must be <10% of calories; and trans fat must be 0g as stated on the label. Exemptions are provided for reduced fat cheese; nuts and nut butters without other ingredients and seafood with no added fat.
